SPIRIT FC 2: The Second Coming (Samurai! TV)
QUARTERFINALS: Rachel Reece -VS- Tesla St. James
Rachel: Tesla and I are about even on the mat, except when it comes to ground and pound. If I can mount her, I can knock her out.
tesla: This fight will be about as even as they get in SPIRIT. And contrary to what I'm normally used to, I'm going to have to keep this fight on our feet and knock her out from there.
ROUND ONE: There was a feeling out process to start, with both fighters trying to find their range in the stand-up. Tesla was more aggressive, constantly looking for the takedown, but Rachel had excellent sprawl and was able to get both hooks in, twist her body, and take Tesla down into side control. She then grinded it out with elbows the rest of the round
ROUND TWO: Tesla pushed the pace again in the second round, clinching with Reece and forcing her up against the cage. There she used a lot of foot stomps and knees while also trying to take Rachel down some more. Reece overpowered her though, pushing St. James against the cage. And after some work, she succeeded in getting the takedown herself. She worked her ground and pound some more from there, with Tesla doing a good job to defend herself - while trying to change her position as well.
ROUND THREE: Tesla was visibly fatiguing, but still doing a good job hanging in the fight. She wasn't as aggressive though, and was determined to keep the fight on its feet in hopes of getting a knockout. And she did succeed in defending a couple takedown attempts, but took her down and went to work with more ground and pound. St. James wasn't defending herself as much anymore though, and the ref had to stop it after several big shots.
WINNER: Rachel Reece at 2:14 of Round 3 via Referee Stoppage (Punches).
QUARTERFINALS: Chinatsu Kawaguchi -VS- Kyra Braddock
Chinatsu: She can't defend against my takedowns, so she won't be standing for very long. In the end, I will make her tap.
Kyra: Chinatsu might be a little better than me on the ground, but she's got to get me there first. Not bloody happening.
ROUND ONE: Kyra came out throwing bombs, mixing in both huge punches and devastating kicks. Kawaguchi tried to take her down, but Kyra was much too strong. She sprawled, stood Chinatsu back up, and forced her into the cage. She then took control of the fight from there, devastating Kawaguchi with uppercuts, elbows, and big knees. It was a knee to the face that got her the win.
WINNER: Kyra Braddock at 1:32 of Round 1 via KO (Knees).
QUARTERFINALS: Erin Samuels -VS- Sonya Benedict
Erin: Sonya is great at stand-up fighting. But she is too aggressive, and has no ground game. I will wear her out, and make her tap.
Sonya: Nothing Erin throws at me will be enough to finish me off. She can't take me down, and she can't submit me. This one will end with a knockout or referee stoppage.
ROUND ONE: Benedict came out very aggressive, landing almost every shot with power. Erin didn't like that though, and drove her backwards into the cage. They worked on eachother with knees from there, with Benedict turning Erin around and against the cage. But they were pretty deadlocked from there, and the ref had to pull them apart.
ROUND TWO: Erin started out the second with animpressive show of her punching power, which Sonya tried her best to defend. Meanwhile, she also focused on chopping away at Erin's legs with kicks. Samuels went for a takedown, but Sonya sprawled, stopping it with a big knee to the face. Erin backed off, but still ate a huge high kick that dropped her. Sonya pounced from there, and Samuels couldn't stop the onslaught.
WINNER: Sonya Benedict at 3:10 of Round 2 via Referee Stoppage (Ground & Pound).
QUARTERFINALS: Hitomi Akera -VS- Izumi Sato
Hitomi: Izumi is a world-class caliber grappler, but I will still overwhelm her.
Izumi: Akera is very good at everything. She won't be easy to beat, but she will be beaten.
ROUND ONE: Hitomi came out swinging, and landing her shots on Sato. Izumi tried to hit back, but it was obvious she needed a lot of work in that particular area. Nevertheless, she shot in and easily took Akera down. Hitomi remained calm though, and almost immediately got her hooks in to limit Sato's ability to work through her. But Izumi proved to be very tenacious, and worked to get out of the mount.
ROUND TWO: Akera came out of her corner in the second, and once again tried to increase the pacing of the fight. But she was surprised when Izumi responded with a quick takedown and moved into side control. Izumi had almost no pound and ground, instead focusing on getting a kimura. Akera toughed it out though, and fought to get back into the guard. But she was forced to tap when Izumi locked in a darce.
WINNER: Izumi Sato at 4:48 of round 2 via Submission (Darce).
SEMI-FINALS: Rachel Reece -VS- Kyra Braddock
Kyra: Reece had a strong showing in the quarter-finals. But it took her three rounds to do it. I won my fight in under one round. So Reece' grappling skill won't do her any good against me.
Rachel: Kyra is too cocky for her own good. Her stand-up might be very good, but I plan on taking her down at will, and working towards a submission.
ROUND ONE: Kyra started things off as the aggressor, backing Reece into the cage. And Braddock was unloading on her with combo after combo, while mixing in kicks to the legs and flying knees. Reece wasn't interested in letting her keep up that pace though, and worked to take Braddock down. Kyra did well defending it at first, but a second effort succeeded in taking her down to the mat. Kyra tried to turn it on her to get a mount position, but Reece fought it off. Kyra wound up giving up her back, which cost her the fight.
WINNER: Rachel Reece at 6:37 of Round 1 via Submission (Rear Naked Choke).
SEMI-FINALS: Sonya benedict -VS- Izumi Sato
Izumi: Sonya and Tesla St. James have both been helping me improve my striking. I have a world of respect for her, but must submit her.
Sonya: I know that I will never be a submissions artist. But training with Izumi has, Tesla, and Sora Kawaii has dramatically increased my grappling defense.
ROUND ONE: As was the case in her first fight, Sonya came out aggressively, unloading on Izumi.with big punches and kicks. Sato tried to fight back, showing what she's learned in the striking game as well, but Benedict had no problem blocking those blows and retaliating. Izumi then shot in for a takedown, and got it after some effort. Sonya fought well from the guard though, landing both punches and elbows while Sato tried to change positions for a submission. She had to wait for the second round to try again though.
ROUND TWO: Benedict came out of the corner in the second, and powered Sato back into the cage with a clinch. She then went to work with a mix of well-placed knees and uppercuts, while Izumi did her best to get the takedown. Sonya connected with a nasty uppercut while still in the clinch, that dropped Izumi. Benedict then sprang onto her and started raining down shots. But to her credit, Sato defended herself well, and succeeded in get out of that position.
ROUND THREE: Izumi got the takedown again, and worked her way into a north south position, where she tried to secure a shoulder lock. Sonya displayed greater strength than her though, and pushed off the cage to change her own position. Izumi got into side control, but Sonya surprised fans by getting back to her feet. Izumi was determined to get the fight back on the ground. But she caught a huge uppercut as she tried to shoot in again, which left her out cold on the mat.
WINNER: Sonya Benedict at 4:25 of Round 3 via KO (Uppercut).
Burning Calm Asaka -VS- Kaede Maki
Burning Calm: I am well-rounded, and will beat Maki in either the stand-up or ground.
Kaede: I will knock Asaka out in the first round. Nobody can stay standing after getting hit with my punches.
ROUND ONE: Kaede came out just looking to knock Burning Calm's head off. Unfortunately for her, that was about the best option she had against the much better overall striker. Asaka landed some very good punches of her own, but her kicks were even more spectacular. She targeted the body and legs with those kicks, before clinching with Maki. And it was obvious there that Burning Calm had the advantage there as well, as she landed a number of nice knees and elbows. Kaede tried for a takedown, but had no luck with it, as Asaka was able to sprawl and keep the fight on the feet. Kaede's leg eventually buckled though, and she fell to the mat with a big punch to the face. Asaka followed up with hammerfists and big elbows, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
WINNER: Burning Calm Asaka at 6:52 of Round 1 via Referee Stoppage (Punches).
FINALS: Rachel Reece -VS- Sonya Benedict
Rachel: Sonya knows her weaknesses, and takes steps to protect them. I know those weaknesses too, and I'm going to exploit them. Sonya will tap one way or the other.
Sonya: I would honestly say Izumi Sato is a better grappler than Rachel Reece. I beat Sato, and I'm going to beat Reece. I will knock her out or force the referee stoppage.
ROUND ONE: Sonya pushed the pace as usual in this fight, but at the same time she was weary of throwing her devastating kicks, in case Reece would catch her leg and use it to take her down. She did land a few to the legs, but once she aimed for the body, Rachel caught it and took her down. The two struggled for some time, before Sonya could turn Reece over and mount her - taking full advantage of her ground and pound. Rachel did a nice job defending herself though, and took Benedict's back right before the round ended.
ROUND TWO: Rachel surprised both the fans and Sonya, by coming out willing to stand with the accomplished striker. And she didn't do too bad in the process, but did take a big Superman punch that knocked her to the mat. Sonya immediately took the mount to deliver some more ground and pound. Rachel fought hard to keep Sonya's head down though, minimizing the damage. At the same time, she also caught Benedict in a nice triangular armlock. Sonya showed her power though, pulling Reece up and slamming her down in hopes of breaking the hold. Reece kept it applied though, and even tightened it a bit. So Sonya slammed her again, which forced her to let go just as the round ended.
ROUND THREE: Fatiguing from her frantic pace, Sonya didn't come out to meet Reece quite as quickly as in the previous two rounds. But try as she might, Reece couldn't take her down anymore. And she took some nice shots to the face while Benedict was sprawling. One such case resulted in a big knee that caused Rachel to crumble, unconscious.
WINNER: Sonya Benedict at 1:01 of Round 3 via KO (Knee).
