SPIRIT FC 1: FIGHT! (Samurai! TV)
Tokyo FM Hall
QUARTER-FINALS: Myra Benedict -VS- Shizuka Komatsu
Myra: "I can beat her on my feet, and on the ground. This fight is a no brainer."
Shizuka: "Myra is very well-rounded, but that won't help her. I'm going to knock her out in the first round."
ROUND ONE: Myra started things off showing her exceptional striking abilities. But Shizuka wanted none of it. She quickly forced a clinch, and started unloading devastating knees on her opponent. Myra tried to take her down in response, but Shizuka held her ground and prevented it. That lead to a stalemate against the cage, with Komatsu landing more knees, and Myra trying to take her down. But it was Shizuka who surprised her and the fans, scoring the takedown herself. She stayed in the mount from there, as she unloaded hammerfists down on Benedict. Myra however, maintained her cool and did her best to try various submissions from the guard. She ultimately forced Komatsu to tap with her signature guillotine choke.
WINNER: Myra Benedict at 7:43 of Round 1 via Submission (Guillotine Choke).
QUARTER-FINALS: Achika Akatani -VS- Fedora Vasilyev
Achika: "Fedora is slow and stupid. I will snap her in two."
Fedora: "I am stronger, and will slam Akatani through the cage floor."
ROUND ONE: Fedora started the fight off trying to soften Achika up with a mix of punches and kicks. But Achika was just too fast for her, and did a good job of staying out of reach. Vasilyev reacted by shooting in and easily getting the takedown. But as if on instinct, Achika countered by going for a triangular armlock. Fedora demonstrated her power though, hoisting Achika up and then slamming her with great force back down. That got Achika to break the hold. Vasilyev then fought to gain side control, but Akatani wouldn't give it to her. And in the end, Achika forced the slightly larger Vasilyev to tap due to an Omo Plata.
WINNER: Achika Akatani at 4:12 of Round 1 via Submission (Omo Plata).
QUARTER-FINALS: Megumi Shibata -VS- Sora Kawaii
Megumi: "Sora is an elite striker. She's aggressive, but not as good at defending herself. I will capitalize on that."
Sora: "This will be a tough fight, but I'm confident that I can knock Megumi out."
ROUND ONE: Both fighters were perfectly content to trade blows with one another. Sora pushed the pace with many well-placed flurries, forcing Shibata to remain on the defense, circling around her opponent and landing some good shots of her own. It was obvious throughout all ten minutes of the first round that the two were very evenly matched. However, Kawaii did manage to open a cut above Megumi's right eye.
ROUND TWO: Megumi changed tactics in the second round, opting to take the fight down to the ground. But the two met in a stalemate there, as each tried submissions, and defended them just as well. And Megumi had the advantage in positioning, so Sora couldn't turn things around and get the mount to utilize her excellent ground and pound.
ROUND THREE: Thre referee was keeping a close eye on Shibata's open cut, but it wasn't impairing her vision, as the blood was mostly flowing around her eye, rather than into it. Kawaii charged out and unloaded some big shots on Megumi's head, determined to get either a referee stoppage or knockout. Despite her endurance, the blood-loss was having an affect on Megumi though, and she fell after a superman punch. Kawaii pounced on her there, and went to town with punches and hammerfists. Megumi tried to defend herself, but the blows were just too hard, and the referee jumped in to stop the fight.
WINNER: Sora Kawaii at 3:26 of Round 3 via Knockout (Punches).
QUARTER-FINALS: Jayde Griffen -VS- Shelby Braddock-Burns
Jayde: "Shelby's greatest weakness is the most basic of them all - punching. That's something I'm pretty good at, and intend to exploit it."
Shelby: "Jayde is a good wrestler, and well-rounded. But she doesn't specialize in anything, and that's to my advantage."
ROUND ONE: Braddock-Burns came into this fight with a strategy. The first part? Take out Griffen's legs. She never threw a single punch, and wasn't very good at avoiding them either. But most of her focus in the stand-up was to dramatically weaken Jayde's legs, while sometimes throwing a good hard kick to the body or head. Jayde stood her ground well though, mixing up some nice punch flurries with kicks as well. But she was stopped cold when she tried for a takedown - and ate a nasty knee to the face that floored her. Shelby then mounted her and finished the job with devastating hammerfists.
WINNER: Shelby-Braddock-Burns at 2:39 of Round 1 via Referee Stoppage (Hammerfists).
SEMI-FINALS: Myra Benedict -VS- Achika Akatani
Achika: "Myra may be the toughest fighter I face. She is great at just about everything. But she won't get past my submissions."
Myra: "Achika won't be easy to beat. She could be the best fighter there is on the ground, but lacks in stand-up. That's my opening."
ROUND ONE: Benedict was clearly the better fighter in stand-up when the fight started, as she very quickly bruised up Achika's legs from kicks, and delivered some very precise punches as well. Akatani drove her against the cage though, and immediately looked stronger in the cage. Myra reacted though by taking her down, and immediately trying to change her position in hopes of getting a submission. Achika defended herself well though, and despite Myra's exceptional skills, succeeded in turning the tide on her. Achika used a tight body lock and went to work to secure a submission of her own from behind. She was on the verge of locking in a rear naked choke when the round came to an end.
ROUND TWO: Achika didn't even let Myra use her stand-up abilities early in the second round, as she immediately shot in and took Benedict down. Myra surprised her on the way down though, cinching in her guillotine choke once more. Akatani kept her composure though, and quickly fought to prevent Myra from applying the necessary pressure for a tapout. Her strength came in handy there, and she worked once more to get past Myra's defenses. It was by no means easy, but Achika was relentless. However, it was starting to take a toll on her. And Myra eventually fought back to her feet, and the round ended with her unloading on Akatani with another massive flurry.
ROUND THREE: Myra came out of her corner in the third with a purpose. She used her assortment of strikes to preoccupy Achika, before delivering a massive kick to the ribs or head. One such kick leveled Achika, but rather than mount her opponent, Benedict decided instead to pick her shots, not allowing akatani back to her feet. Kicks to the legs and stomps were the majority of her assault, but she mixed in some big punches as well. Akatani meanwhile kept a watchful eye out for a stray limb to grab and slap a submission onto. And she did surprise Myra with a couple good up-kicks as well. Myra eventually backed up, letting Achika get to her feet. But then Myra shot in for another takedown which she won after some effort. Akatani was visibly tiring, but still battling it out. When the round ended, the crowd gave both women a great show of respect and appreciation.
WINNER: Achika Akatani after Round 3 via Judges' Decision (29-28).
SEMI-FINALS: Sora Kawaii -VS- Shelby Braddock-Burns
Shelby: "If this fight goes to the ground, it's mine for the taking. She might be a great striker, but I can out-wrestle her anyday. And my kicks aren't all that shabby either."
Sora: "Shelby's Muay Thai is outstanding. But so is mine. She might be a little bit better on the ground, but who says that's where I'm going? Either way though, I'm going to knock her out."
ROUND ONE: Shelby tried to keep the fight at a slower pace, but Kawaii wouldn't have it, as she fought aggressively, quickly taking the offensive. That forced Braddock-Burns to circle the cage a lot, while constantly working over Kawaii's legs with brutal kicks. Sora matched her with equally brutal punches and kicks of her own. Shelby tested her sprawling ability, and Sora turned away her attempt at the takedown. That forced Shelby to continue working on the legs, while mixing in some elbows and big body kicks. And both women were pretty even when they clinched up, but Shelby came out ahead due to some well placed knees that stunned her opponent.
ROUND TWO: Both fighters engaged in a kicking contest to start off the second round, quickly bruising up eachother's legs. Kawaii continued to charge ahead with some awesome punch flurries, which kept Shelby off-balance much of the time. Braddock-Burns did win the kicking contest though, causing Kawaii's knee to buckle. But before Shelby got the chance to capitalize, Sora quickly returned to her feet. Shelby went for another kick, but Sora managed to catch this one, and tried to take her down against the cage. Braddock-Burns fought it off, however, but was floored by an uppercut out of nowhere. Sora pounced to make sure she was done, but she barely got a punch off before the ref pulled her away.
WINNER: Sora Kawaii at 1:51 of Round 2 via Knockout (Uppercut).
Akane Otsuka -VS- Clementina Vargas
Akane: "I am the best, most well-rounded fighter in the world. This is my company. Clementina Vargas is my employee. And I will show her how a real fighter wins."
Clementina: "She may be my boss, but I'm still going to knock that big head right off Akane's shoulders. May then next time she'll think twice about underestimating me."
ROUND ONE: Akane started things off standing back and taunting Vargas to come at her. Clementina tried that, but it backfired on her, as Otsuka was clearly better in the stand-up game. Otsuka backed her into the clinch and got to work, but Vargas soon surprised her, turning the tables - pressing her up against the cage and unloading with knees and elbows. Otsuka tried to counter with a takedown, but Vargas fought it off well enough. She chose to continue using the clinch, since it was working for her. But Akane wasn't a pushover either, and eventually created some separation between them. From there, she utilized her strength-fueled punches and kicks to batter Clementina - who really hung in there and gave her a lot of trouble as well. Clementina took the upper hand a little later with another clinch and more of her big knees and elbows. But Otsuka hit just a little bit harder, and finally succeeded in slamming Vargas to the floor. There Otsuka took the mount and went to town on her with punches and hammerfists. Clementina defended herself well, and tried to improve her position, but Otsuka just smothered her and worked to improve her position until locking in a shoulder lock from the north south position. Clementina had no choice but to tap.
WINNER: Akane Otsuka at 8:22 of Round 1 via Submission (Shoulder Lock).
FINALS: Achika Akatani -VS- Sora Kawaii
Achika: "I've come too far to let Kawaii take the Middleweight title out from under my nose. Once I get my hands on her and bring her to the ground, it's over."
Sora: "I must win. Not just for me, but for everyone at my Taipan Dojo. I need to prove that we are the toughest, and the best. I need to knock Akatani out."
ROUND ONE: Both Sora and Achika came out of their corners like two freight trains on a collision course. Sora caught Achika with a nasty cross, but Akatani ducked down after taking it, and took Kawaii down to the ground. Achika then tried her hand at some ground and pound, which proved to be pretty effective. Sora knew how to defend herself though, and even fired back with some shots of her own. They weren't as hard or effective from the guard position though. Still, Achika decided to improve her own position - which Sora did everything in her power to prevent. Achika rammed elbows into her face a few times before slipping into side control. There she drove a couple knees into Sora's ribs, before trying for a kimura. Sora defended it well though, and continued to get in some shots of her own in the process. But neither could gain any clear advantage before the ten minute first round ended.
ROUND TWO: This time around, Sora didn't charge out. She just let Akatani shoot in on her, driving her backwards into the cage as Achika attempted to take her down. But Kawaii smartly used the cage to assist her in preventing the takedown. The two locked up in a clinch, where Sora was relentless with strikes and knees. Akatani's best defense was to constantly look for a takedown. Although she ate one knee in the mouth, she still managed to grab a hold of the leg and try again to get the takedown. Sora fought her again, but Achika powered her away from the cage wall, and eventually down once more. The two battled for position, but a slight mistake forced Achika to give up her back. Sora quickly took the back mount and locked in a body scissors. From there she pummeled Akatani, looking to soften her up for a submission. Sora almost locked in a choke, but Achika fought her tooth-and-nail to close out the round.
ROUND THREE: Both women were sweating pretty heavily at this point, Achika sporting a black eye. And they were both tired from the relentless pacing, but were determined to carry on until the fight was over. Both were determined to win this round just in case it went to a decision. Achika utilized some striking to distract Sora enough for a takedown, while Kawaii kept an eye open for the takedown attempts, while simultaneously throwing right and left bombs at Achika. Which resulted in the two circling one another in a stalemate. But stalemates don't last forever in MMA, and Kawaii took the upper hand with a massive flurry of punches that backed Achika into the cage, and then sent her tumbling to the floor following a nasty elbow. Sora quickly took the mount and began another assault with elbows and hammerfists. It looked like Akatani was out for a second, but the referee was right there keeping a close watch, and let the fight continue. Despite having some blows getting through her defenses, Achika seemed to recover somewhat. She tried several times for a triangle choke, before finally getting it applied. Kawaii tried to stand up and power out of it, but Achika prevented that, and tightened the hold, forcing Kawaii to tap.
WINNER: Achika Akatani at 5:50 of Round 3 via Submission (Triangle Choke).
